Let’s Bring Invention Education to SXSW EDU 2023!

From August 9th to the 21st, vote for three panel proposals to bring engaging discussions and workshops on Invention Education to the 2023 South by Southwest (SXSW) EDU Conference. Held in Austin, TX, from March 10th to the 19th, SXSW EDU is a chance to show off the best of what Invention Education can bring to educators of all experience levels and their students.

Community voting counts for 30% of the selection decisions, so please register and vote for all three Invention Education panels so that more students can benefit from this confidence-boosting, creative approach to learning. Your votes matter!

Invention Ed: Teaching Creators, Not Consumers
Join us to hear from Invention Education practitioners across the K-16 spectrum and one student inventor about how to enhance learning, open minds and possibilities, and prepare students for the jobs of the future through invention. Participants will leave with hands-on activities that will improve current STEM practices — and a better understanding of Invention Education and why it benefits all students.

Panelists:
David Coronado, The Lemelson Foundation (Moderator)
Antonio Gamboa, Science teacher at Garey High School in Pomona, CA
Dr. Kristin Moon, Program Administrator, Technology and Engineering at Portland Public Schools, OR
Katelyn Sweeney, MIT graduate and former student inventor

Inventing the Future, From Your Classroom
In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn from teachers who have successfully integrated Invention Education into their curricula. Participants will engage in several invention activities for grades K-12 to support integration of invention and innovation into multiple content areas, showing how Invention Education is an important and inclusive way to combine all STEM disciplines.

Panelists:
Juan Valentin, United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Education Program Advisor
Dr. Kristin Moon, Program Administrator, Technology and Engineering at Portland Public Schools, OR
Mark Westlake, Innovation Center Director at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, MN

“Lost Einsteins” Among Us: From Classroom to Career
In 2018, Raj Chetty estimated we could quadruple the rate of innovation in the U.S. economy if we invested more equitably in the education of our “Lost Einsteins” — the millions of potential inventors (women, people of color, and individuals from low-income families) left behind in the economy. This panel will explore how Invention Education is narrowing these gaps and connecting students to thriving careers.

Panelists:
David Coronado, The Lemelson Foundation (Moderator)
Jessie Garcia, Former student inventor / entrepreneur and Founder and CEO of Tozuda
Dr. Stephanie Couch, Executive Director of the Lemelson-MIT program
Dr. Gloria Bañuelos, Lab Lead, Qualcomm Thinkabit Lab
